Deprecation warning from PIP

We currently use --install-option to build our python package but recently we have been receiving this deprecation warning from pip and according to pypa/pip#11358 is because setuptools install is deprecated.

WARNING: Implying --no-binary=:all: due to the presence of --build-option / --global-option / --install-option. Consider using --config-settings for more flexibility.
DEPRECATION: --install-option is deprecated because it forces pip to use the 'setup.py install' command which is itself deprecated. pip 23.1 will enforce this behaviour change. A possible replacement is to use --config-settings. Dis

DEPRECATION: --no-binary currently disables reading from the cache of locally built wheels. In the future --no-binary will not influence the wheel cache. pip 23.1 will enforce this behaviour change. A possible replacement is to use 
the --no-cache-dir option. You can use the flag --use-feature=no-binary-enable-wheel-cache to test the upcoming behaviour. Discussion can be found at https://github.com/pypa/pip/issues/11453

We have the following setup.py

from setuptools.command.develop import develop


class Build(develop):
    user_options = develop.user_options + [
        ("option=", None, "option"),
    ]

    def initialize_options(self):
        develop.initialize_options(self)
        self.option = "1"

    def finalize_options(self):
        develop.finalize_options(self)

    def run(self):
        develop.run(self)
        # do something with self.option


setuptools.setup(
    cmdclass={"develop": Build},
    ...
)

so that we can build our package in editable mode with some option that we can set for example.

pip install -e . --install-option="--option=4"

since --install-option will be deprecated what is the alternative? I've been searching around and it's not obvious what to do exactly.

+1 on this. Since pip 23.1 has come out I'm no longer able to pass --install-option values through from pip and have had to find workarounds, such as setting environment variables. I posted at pypa/pip#12010 about this too.
