Sphinx provides a last_updated context variable, which is controlled by html_last_updated_fmt.

We should set last_updated to the "default" value when it is presented by Sphinx (like we update the permalinks icon), so that it is shown out-of-the-box. It may also be possible to detect when the user is using https://github.com/mgeier/sphinx-last-updated-by-git, and place the last updated information in the article-footer instead of site-footer.
