When selecting my internal laptop screen, listed as "1 - eDP-1, 1920x1080" in the variety preferences, the slideshow appears on my external monitor, listed as "2 - DP-1-1, 1920x1080"; and vice versa. This happens when monitor 2 (external) is "primary" in the display settings, i.e., the one showing the gnome top bar. Presumably, the preferences list is populated based on the xrandr -q connection order or similar, while the map from number to display when running the slideshow is based on a different mechanism that always maps 1 to the primary monitor.

The order in variety-slideshow --help is consistent with actual behavior: Your current monitors are: 1 - DP-1-1, 1920x1080, 2 - eDP-1, 1920x1080. So the inconsistency is only with the listing in the variety preferences window.
