Hmm, this change might break node-template
and Polkadot.

I added rocksdb
as an enabled-by-default feature on substrate-service
. When you import the service, you have to explicitly say default-features = false
if you don't want rocksdb. This should be fairly fail-safe.
For context, what happens in the worst case scenario is an error at initialization, so it's not that big of a deal. What I'm mostly trying to avoid is the surprise factor.
Its tests use tokio, which fails to compile.

Hmm.
Having the browser stuff in the cli crate, is somewhat weird. Why not create an extra crate for it node-browser
or whatever?
Also, if we don't put this into CI, it will be broken probably tomorrow.

Can you not just give the path to wasm-pack
?

This wasn't possible back when I wrote by initial prototype, but seems possible now 👍
I probably did things in the wrong order, but my intention was to do #3192 again and rename |

(paritytech#4079) * Create typed client helpers for querying chain state storage items declared by 'decl_storage!'. * Update substrate-rpc-custom functions to use async await syntax. * The implementation of substrate-rpc-custom was a bit verbose and repetitive. This commit makes the implementation simpler by intruducing a struct which represents query for a typed value in storage. The new struct is called StorageQuery. A StorageQuery wraps a raw StorageKey but is not directy constructable. To construct a StorageQuery, the user must supply an implementation of a srml_support::storage::generator trait such as StorageValue or StorageMap. A type implementing one of the generator traits can be aquired by: A) marking a storage item as pub within a call to decl_storage (recommended) or B) implementing one of the generator types manually. While option B may sometimes me necessary, it's not recommended because separate manual implementaions may lose sync with the original definition. * drop unused dependency * fmt * Remove unnecessary pub from Authorities field in test-runtime storage declaration. This field was added to support a test in an earlier commit. The test no longer relies on test-runtime so the change can be reverted. * Move it to srml as support extension. * Fix long lines. * Fix. cc #2416
Adds the necessary code to make node-cli compile for the browser.
See the
README.md
inbrowser-demo
for instructions.Note that this doesn't work yet. The node compiles and can start, but panics at runtime most notably because of time-related functions. See #2416 for more details.
How this works
node-cli
now has two features:cli
andbrowser
. Thecli
feature is enabled by default and provides all CLI-related functions. Thebrowser
feature is disabled by default and provides the functions that the JavaScript code has to call in order to run the node.Contrary to my previous prototype, I think this is quite a clean design. It makes sense to me that the same package ("node-cli") can be used either as a binary or from the browser, depending on how it is compiled.
