When connecting to a Substrate chain with custom type definitions, as brought up by alex siman on Riot over the weekend, how can we make this part easy?
Should we have beginner users really upload a custom type json as in /apps? I lean towards No, but I can't really see an alternative.

Yeah, this is a big problem... We could have a folder with a lot of jsons, one for each "big enough" chain, and each json will hold the custom types. But of course it's not ideal.
Until the day we have full metadata of all runtime types, I don't think there's any miracle solution.
