Coles Supermarket is marked as dissolved in the NSI, but seems to be trading (in Australia at least).

Looking at Q1108172, I can't see any dissolved value, but I can in Coles Group Q1339055 which is marked as the operator, but they to seem to be active.

How should this be resolved?

I remember seeing something like this a bit ago where a warning about a deleted brand Wikidata item was actually referring to a deleted item in a operator:wikidata tag associated with the brand preset but was listed on the warnings page under the brand. I guess the script checks all QIDs listed in the preset, and if it finds any issues anywhere, it lists them as belonging to the brand. (I suppose that's technically true, but perhaps there's a way to modify the script to be less vague about which QID is causing the warning.)

As for the more specific issue in question, according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coles_Group#Spin-off_(2018%E2%80%93present) and the paragraph that precedes it, Coles Group was indeed merged out of existence in 2007, but was then resurrected in 2018 as a new entity following its spinoff. This has similarities to the Toys R Us brand in the US, which shut down in 2018 but was revived in 2021. In that case, I created a new Wikidata item for the 2021 revival to keep statements that belonged to one incarnation but not the other completely separate.

Correct.

Seems like that would be okay, if Wikidata does that we can update the operator:wikidata, otherwise we can consider this a false positive until that's fixed.

I made a new item for the 2018 incarnation at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q131937428.

Thanks, looks like we're both editing it now 😅

Were you planning on updating the wikidata item for the item in NSI? Happy to leave that to you, if not I can do it.

Then once that has made it's way through to iD, I'll suggest a mass edit to update them in OSM.
