As our application continues to grow in complexity, we need to improve our observability capabilities to better understand the performance and behavior of our systems. The current logging approach is becoming insufficient, and we need a more comprehensive and standardized solution.
Proposal: Implement OpenTelemetry
OpenTelemetry is an open-source, vendor-neutral observability framework that provides a set of APIs, SDKs, and tools for generating and collecting telemetry data (metrics, logs, and traces) from applications and systems. By implementing OpenTelemetry, we can benefit from the following:
Vendor-neutral approach: OpenTelemetry allows us to collect and export telemetry data to various observability backends, such as Jaeger, Prometheus, Elasticsearch, and more, without being locked into a specific vendor or tool.
