Globally replace the SVG icon for the Checkbox within the lara light theme

I would like to replace the svg icon for the p-checkbox globally and I am using a customized lara light theme from the Sass Themes repository. The designers have tweaked the theme and it includes a slightly modified checkbox icon.

I tried using a chckicon pTemplate within the checkbox ngtemplate and this didn't work. I tried using ::ng:deep and :host::ng:deep in the global styles.scss and this didn't work either.

I don't see any additional documentation for this type of customization. Is something like this possible without having to customize the base component source?
