Ubuntu 22 on codespaces

One nicety of ubuntu 22 is having more up-to-date compilers without any extra configuration.

We already use this access to ubuntu 22 in our github-actions, but I'm wondering if similar OS options will come to codespaces.

Hi @anandijain, welcome to the GitHub Community! We don't have any news to share on this directly but if you're interested in Ubuntu 22 coming to the default codespaces environment then you can keep an eye on the "Universal" image in this devcontainers/images repository.

You'll likely also be able to set up an Ubuntu 22 environment if you really want to using a custom devcontainer

As of feb 2024 it still seems the image you get by default is ubuntu 20.04. Is there any chance this will change soon? I think 22.04 would be a sensible default by now as the software selection in 20.04 is getting pretty outdated (for example there is no podman in the repos which would be available in 22.04)

Agreed that it would be helpful to have 22.04 to make installing podman easier (the podman-homebrew feature seems to be broken, at least in a GitHub Codespace environment).

One current option for installing podman in a Codespace is using conda (specifically, from the conda-forge channel), though at least a few configuration tweaks are needed to get rootless podman to work (this might not be an optimal list):
