"AI and ICT comes with significant environmental impacts, including the energy required to train and to deploy AI models, the embodied carbon in data centers and network infrastructure, and the water used to cool these centers. The overall picture is complex, with leading tech companies such as Microsoft being major investors in renewable energy, while at the same time championing approaches to sustainability that have been criticised as techno-solutionist. Digital technology including AI have many applications to improve sustainability, but measurement is challenging, and it’s often hard to weigh up the positive and negative impacts. This interactive workshop will be an opportunity to dive into these complexities, share challenges and best practices, and imagine a pathway to a sustainable digital future."
Cheers,
Jo
