Rigid Origami Folding

Thanks for the awsome tool! I'm looking at the rigid twisted square example in the Design JSON examples. From the code and the blender program it appears that the minimum and maximum valley and mountain folds for all crease lines are pre determined. In this case the crease pattern is flat foldable, therefore the maximum fold for all foldable edges is positive or negative pi (marked yellow in picture attached).

Questions:

1. By what method are these maximum fold values (0,..,-pi) and (0,...,pi) determined for crease patterns that are not flat foldable?
2. In case a method to determine these maximum fold values is known, then this will also prevent self-intersection for crease patterns that are not flat foldable, correct?
