a maildir should be a maildir directory and an optional folder

so ("~/mymaildir" . "important") is the maildir: /home/nferrier/mymaildir/.important

and ("~/mymaildir" . nil) is the INBOX of the maildir: /home/nferrier/mymaildir/

This would clear a lot up I think.
