Description of the new feature / enhancement

Overview

jpg pictures in Windows support photo tags. These can be very useful when searching and organizing photo collections but almost no one uses them because the current methods of managing them are awkward. Furthermore, since these are all freeform tags it's very easy to end up with inconsistent tags like "cat", "cats", "blackcat", black cat", "black", etc which makes searching very difficult.

Basic Concept

The proposal is for an Explorer context menu:

  1. Right-click in explorer and pick "Tag Photos" --> Manage Tags...
  2. It opens a list where you can add new tags you would like to use or remove old ones.
  3. Right-click on any photo or multiple selected photos and pick "Tag Photos" --> {Tag name} from the context menu
  4. It adds the new tag to the list of tags on those photos

Additional Thoughts

  1. Context menu should probably be hidden if the picture doesn't support tags (ie. png) or some way to inform the user that they can't tag this file.
  2. Need a way to delete tags from photos. Maybe checkboxes on each tag in the context menu? Seems kind of awkward if it's even possible -- I'm imagining myself scrolling down this context menu list of tags to target the checkbox I need, then moving too far to the side and losing the whole menu and having to start over again.
  3. Maybe some method to rename a tag and replace it on all photos? Might be a bit too complex for a Powertoy and better served by a third-party app.

In any case, I'm interested to see what people think on this idea.

Scenario when this would be used?

Sample Use Case

Let's say you just returned from a vacation where you took a lot of pictures and want to easily tag them for filtering later.

  1. Add new tags for vacation place, year, and things you want to tag as needed.
  2. You tag all photos with the vacation place and year.
  3. You multi-select all photos with a specific person and tag them with that person's name.
  4. Repeat for anything else that might be interesting to tag.

Several months later, you want to find a picture of your spouse. Open explorer and type your spouse's name to find all pictures of them across all photos. You decide that you want a photo of them from this specific vacation, so you add the vacation name to further filter the results and show only your spouse during that vacation.

Alternatively, several third-party apps have support for using image tags even if they don't have support for managing them.
