Certificates vanish when course is deleted

I was hoping to clear out some old courses but discovered that when I delete a course all the certificates are deleted too. While this makes sense (it is a course activity after all), it would be beneficial to have the option to be able retain the certificates issued to students after the deletion of a course.
So I am guessing this is a feature request!
