Increment goal requires direct invocation

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Add the code for <plugin> and <pluginRepositories> from GettingStarted
2. Bind the <execution> to any phase and run mvn install
3. See it fail.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I get this error message:
[INFO] Mojo: 'increment' requires direct invocation. It cannot be used as part 
of the lifecycle (it was included via the POM).

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Using 2.0-SNAPSHOT, with Maven 2 on Debian Linux

Please provide any additional information below.

Why doesn't the default example work? How can I run the goal directly then?
