Denormalize the ignored users from account data to a separate table.

This allows for efficiently finding which users ignore a particular user.

Still to do:

  • Add some tests
  • Figure out why sytest is failing

Questions:

  • Is there a better way to sync the list of ignored users?
  • Does the migration make sense? There isn't that many rows for it to run across on matrix.org. Not sure about other servers.

Questions:

  • Is there a better way to sync the list of ignored users?

I think your method is probably "correct". The common case will be single additions/deletions, and by only touching rows that change we don't unnecessarily lock rows that have stayed the same. The alternative would be to delete all entries and insert the new set.

  • Does the migration make sense? There isn't that many rows for it to run across on matrix.org. Not sure about other servers.

On m.org it takes 1s to load all the ignored lists, which is ~17K rows. I think it'll probably take another few seconds to insert, but I think that is probably reasonable given the alternative involves background updates and handling the case that hasn't finished yet.

FYI changing this from an upsert has non-obvious performance cost: simple_upsert will be run in autocommit mode which a) involves fewer round trips (as no BEGIN/COMMIT commands) and b) means it doesn't get run in REPEATABLE READ isolation level, which has overhead and more likely to conflict with other transactions. I don't think it matters in this case though.

It is still doing a simple_upsert_txn internally, does that make sense or not really? Hopefully this won't conflict much since it would need to be a user conflicting with themself?

It's all correct currently, I just wanted to flag that calling simple_upsert is actually not the same as calling runInteraction and simple_upsert_txn from a perf PoV. I don't think we need to worry about it here though, as we're unlikely to see conflicts (which is where it really matters).

This might not work well with downgrades, unfortunately. The ignored_users table would get out of sync with the account_data table. The "fix" from a user POV is easy since any newly inserted data will sync them, I'm not sure if that's an "OK" workaround or not though.

From conversation in #synapse-dev:matrix.org we came to the conclusion to bump the schema version.
