This PR includes HAProxy reverse proxy guide update. HAProxy will still listen to IPv4 and IPv6 ports but doesn't send IPv4-mapped address to homserver anymore. Also moved forwarding headers to the backend part as recommended by several guides.

PR also includes a simple delegation guide.

HAproxy reverse proxy guide update to stop sending IPv4-mapped address to HS. Also a simple delegation guide.

Looks like the CI has gone wonky-maybe rerun the GHA workflows?

@clokep fixed something that allowed me to merge with the develop branch. Hopefully the PR is fine now.

thanks for this! I've got a few questions and comments though.

I think I got a bit too carried away with "what works for me" so I limited the changes to #12124 for now.

unfortunately this is not secure, due to #9471 (for which fixes are welcome!) - option forwardfor makes haproxy append an entry to any existing X-Forwarded-For header, whereas synapse uses the first entry in the header.

Thanks for letting me know. This can be solved by adding "http-request del-header x-forwarded-for" before option forwardfor. But we might as well keep the original setting since it's just one line

this is not a valid /.well-known/matrix/client file.
Also: don't you need to set CORS headers for a client .well-known to work?

Thanks, I fixed mine :) I need to study more about CORS headers before I advising other server admins. I reverted this one.

this isn't very clear. Why are we giving multiple options here? Which is the user supposed to do? (What was wrong with the original?)

I prefer local IPv6 traffic, because... uum... the future? 🙈 anyway, localhost is in half of the tutorials and 127.0.0.1 is in the other half so I kept that one here so it'll redirect traffic to whichever is listening.

again, I don't think this is the place to be giving the user lots of different options. Let's make a single recommendation. If advanced users want to do things like restrict TLS versions they can research how to do it themselves.

Got carried away again. Sorry about hat

the use of a directory here was deliberate - could you explain why changing to a single file is prefererable?

My distro doesn't have that folder so I thought it was just an example. I reverted it back. I created a haproxy.key file that has cert.pem and fullchain.pem cat'd together. I reverted this one.

Localhost can cause issues without IPv6 support and if resolve-prefer isn't enabled
@villepeh

Localhost can actually cause issues in some scenarios: resolver defaults to ipv6 even if local ipv6 not available in network stack. Going back to 127.0.0.1.

Just to make you aware, we normally need a legally identifiable name here (see https://matrix-org.github.io/synapse/latest/development/contributing_guide.html#sign-off). Since this is a small change to the docs, I don't think it's too important for this PR, but if you make more contributions in future we'll need a legal name.

Synapse 1.56.0 (2022-04-05)
===========================

Synapse will now refuse to start up if open registration is enabled, in order to help mitigate
abuse across the federation. If you would like
to provide registration to anyone, consider adding [email](https://github.com/matrix-org/synapse/blob/8a519f8abc6de772167c2cca101d22ee2052fafc/docs/sample_config.yaml#L1285),
[recaptcha](https://matrix-org.github.io/synapse/v1.56/CAPTCHA_SETUP.html)
or [token-based](https://matrix-org.github.io/synapse/v1.56/usage/administration/admin_api/registration_tokens.html) verification
in order to prevent automated registration from bad actors.
This check can be disabled by setting the `enable_registration_without_verification` option in your
homeserver configuration file to `true`. More details are available in the
[upgrade notes](https://matrix-org.github.io/synapse/v1.56/upgrade.html#open-registration-without-verification-is-now-disabled-by-default).

Synapse will additionally now refuse to start when using PostgreSQL with a non-`C` values for `COLLATE` and `CTYPE`, unless
the config flag `allow_unsafe_locale`, found in the database section of the configuration file, is set to `true`. See the
[upgrade notes](https://matrix-org.github.io/synapse/v1.56/upgrade#change-in-behaviour-for-postgresql-databases-with-unsafe-locale)
for details.

Internal Changes
----------------

- Bump the version of `black` for compatibility with the latest `click` release. ([\matrix-org#12320](matrix-org#12320))

Synapse 1.55.2 (2022-03-24)
===========================

This patch version reverts the earlier fixes from Synapse 1.55.1, which could cause problems in certain deployments, and instead adds a cap to the version of Jinja to be installed. Again, this is to fix an incompatibility with version 3.1.0 of the [Jinja](https://pypi.org/project/Jinja2/) library, and again, deployments of Synapse using the `matrixdotorg/synapse` Docker image or Debian packages from packages.matrix.org are not affected.

Internal Changes
----------------

- Pin Jinja to <3.1.0, as Synapse fails to start with Jinja 3.1.0. ([\#12297](matrix-org/synapse#12297))
- Revert changes from 1.55.1 as they caused problems with older versions of Jinja ([\#12296](matrix-org/synapse#12296))

Synapse 1.55.1 (2022-03-24)
===========================

This is a patch release that fixes an incompatibility with version 3.1.0 of the [Jinja](https://pypi.org/project/Jinja2/) library, released on March 24th, 2022. Deployments of Synapse using the `matrixdotorg/synapse` Docker image or Debian packages from packages.matrix.org are not affected.

Internal Changes
----------------

- Remove uses of the long-deprecated `jinja2.Markup` which would prevent Synapse from starting with Jinja 3.1.0 or above installed. ([\#12289](matrix-org/synapse#12289))

Synapse 1.55.0 (2022-03-22)

This release removes a workaround introduced in Synapse 1.50.0 for Mjolnir compatibility. **This breaks compatibility with Mjolnir 1.3.1 and earlier. ([\#11700](matrix-org/synapse#11700; Mjolnir users should upgrade Mjolnir before upgrading Synapse to this version.

This release also moves the location of the `synctl` script; see the [upgrade notes](https://github.com/matrix-org/synapse/blob/develop/docs/upgrade.md#synctl-script-has-been-moved) for more details.

Synapse 1.56.0 (2022-04-05)
===========================

Synapse will now refuse to start up if open registration is enabled, in order to help mitigate
abuse across the federation. If you would like
to provide registration to anyone, consider adding [email](https://github.com/matrix-org/synapse/blob/8a519f8abc6de772167c2cca101d22ee2052fafc/docs/sample_config.yaml#L1285),
[recaptcha](https://matrix-org.github.io/synapse/v1.56/CAPTCHA_SETUP.html)
or [token-based](https://matrix-org.github.io/synapse/v1.56/usage/administration/admin_api/registration_tokens.html) verification
in order to prevent automated registration from bad actors.
This check can be disabled by setting the `enable_registration_without_verification` option in your
homeserver configuration file to `true`. More details are available in the
[upgrade notes](https://matrix-org.github.io/synapse/v1.56/upgrade.html#open-registration-without-verification-is-now-disabled-by-default).

Synapse will additionally now refuse to start when using PostgreSQL with a non-`C` values for `COLLATE` and `CTYPE`, unless
the config flag `allow_unsafe_locale`, found in the database section of the configuration file, is set to `true`. See the
[upgrade notes](https://matrix-org.github.io/synapse/v1.56/upgrade#change-in-behaviour-for-postgresql-databases-with-unsafe-locale)
for details.

Internal Changes
----------------

- Bump the version of `black` for compatibility with the latest `click` release. ([\matrix-org#12320](matrix-org#12320))
