Design tests to prevent infinite rendering loops

As a follow up to #3399:
I could not find a consistent or straightforward way of testing for regressions of that behavior using our current setup with jsdom, tape, and sinon, so we should look into alternative testing infrastructure for ensuring that rendering cycles behave as expected and/or a refactor of SourceCache.
