This entire file is baffled to me and I would recommend removing completely and substituting with core post thumbnails instead.

This theme was built for a site that's already up and running. The site wasn't using the featured image, instead, it either used a user-field, or the first image in the post.
The functions in this file take either the user field, or the first image in the post, and turn them into the post's featured image.
It was certainly needed when we uploaded the theme, but even now, the site admin doesn't always remember to use the featured image, and uses one of the old methods instead. Having these functions prevents the site from looking bad in these cases.

I believe that you could migrate, but if this is not easily done, leave it as is.
