Overview

This document provides information on how to use the new interactive installer and describes the main options available.

OS pre-requirements

By default, our target platform already has python3 under the hood and no additional packages are needed and other preparation steps.

For running installer the next command can be used:

wget -q https://raw.githubusercontent.com/cheqd/cheqd-node/interactive_installer/installer/installer.py && sudo python3 installer.py

Installer modes

All the questions at the end have the default value in [] brackets, like [default: 1]. If a default value exists you can just press Enter without needing to type the whole answer.

This installer has 2 possible options:

  • Installation from scratch
  • Upgrade existing installation

General questions

The next questions will be used with both options:

  • Question about versions:
1) v0.5.0
2) v0.6.0-rc2
3) v0.6.0-rc1
4) v0.5.0-rc2
5) v0.5.0-rc1
Choose the appropriate list option number above to select the version of cheqd-node to install [default: 1]:

where default version is the latest release. The others just next even pre-releases, just the next.

  • Set path for cheqd user's home directory [default: /home/cheqd]:. This is essentialy a question about where the home directory, .cheqdnode, is located or will be.

Clean installation

If you are using the installer on a clean machine the next group of questions are significant:

  • Do you want to setup a new cheqd-node? (yes/no) [default: yes]:. This options can be used in case of setting up the node.
  • Select cheqd network to join (testnet/mainnet) [default: mainnet]:. For now, we have 2 networks, testnet and mainnet. Please, type here which chain you want to use or just keep the default by clicking Enter.
  • Install cheqd-noded using Cosmovisor? (yes/no) [default: yes]: . Default value is going to be Yes. We assume, that the next upgrades can be in an automative mode.
  • CAUTION: Downloading a snapshot replaces your existing copy of chain data. Usually safe to use this option when doing a fresh installation. Do you want to download a snapshot of the existing chain to speed up node synchronisation? (yes/no) [default: yes]:. This can help you speed up the catchup to cheqd network.

Questions if you answered Yes for setting up the node after installation:

  • Provide a moniker for your cheqd-node [default: test-interactive-installer]: . (this is just a nickname for your node, used for things like block explorer).

  • What is the externally-reachable IP address or DNS name for your cheqd-node? [default: Fetch automatically via DNS resolver lookup]:. This is an IP address of your node. This address shows your public address.

  • Specify port for Tendermint RPC [default: 26657]:. RPC port for client-node communications.

  • Specify port for Tendermint P2P [default: 26656]:. Port for node-to-node communications.

  • Specify minimum gas price for transactions [default: 25ncheq]:. Gas-price parameter.

After completely a successful installation, cheqd-noded is ready to be started and it's time to complete the post-install steps

Upgrade case

To run an Upgrade scenario you'll be required to setup a current home directory for a cheqd user as an answer on question Set path for cheqd user's home directory [default: /home/cheqd]:. The upgrade scenario will be used as long as this directory exists.

Install from scratch

If there is $HOME/.cheqdnode directory, where $HOME is the answer on the question Set path for cheqd user's home directory [default: /home/cheqd]: , the installer assumes that there is already an installation on the machine. In this case the next questions will be:

  • Existing cheqd-node configuration folder detected. Do you want to upgrade an existing cheqd-node installation? (yes/no) [default: no]:. Here there 2 possible ways, upgrade current installation and remove all and install from the scratch. In case of answering No the next question will be:

  • WARNING: Doing a fresh installation of cheqd-node will remove ALL existing configuration and data. CAUTION: Please ensure you have a backup of your existing configuration and data before proceeding. Do you want to do fresh installation of cheqd-node? (yes/no) [default: no]:. Please make sure, that answer 'Yes' means removing all the ledger-related data with config and data directories. Please check that you have copied your private keys and configs After that installation process will complete as installation from the beginning.

Upgrade current installation

In case of yes on the upgrade question, the next flow will be:

  • Install cheqd-noded using Cosmovisor? (yes/no) [default: yes]: - It's needed only for figuring out is Cosmovisor uses for now.

  • Overwrite existing systemd configuration for cheqd-node? (yes/no) [default: yes]:. This question will be asked if rewriting is needed, for example, if the existing systemd config file for cheqd-noded or cheqd-cosmovisor is used.

  • Overwrite existing configuration for cheqd-node logging? (yes/no) [default: yes]:. In case of existing /etc/rsyslog.d/cheqd-node.conf config file this question will be asked to check if rewriting is needed.

  • Overwrite existing configuration for logrotate? (yes/no) [default: yes]:. In case of existing /etc/logrotate.d/cheqd-node config file this question will be asked to check if rewriting is needed.

Postinstall steps

When the installation process ends you can start the systemctl service:

sudo systemctl start <service-name>

where <service-name> is a name of service depending was Install Cosmovisor selected or not.

  • cheqd-cosmovisor if Cosmovisor was installed.
  • cheqd-noded in case of keeping cheqd-noded as was with debian package approach.

For checking that service works, please run the next command:

systemctl status <service-name>

where <service-name> has the same meaning as above.

Move from Debian installation to new interactive with Cosmovisor support

For this to work correctlly, the Debian package should be removed first.

sudo apt remove cheqd-node

Please take it into account, that apt remove just removes the binary and systemd config. All your ledger configs and data will remain the same. For additional comfort, before all the manipulations with installer are done, make sure that you have a copy of your private keys, somewhere outside.

Afterward you'll need to rewrite systemd, logrotate and rsyslog configs by running the installer, by answering Yes or y on questions below:

1) v0.5.0
2) v0.6.0
3) v0.6.0-rc2
4) v0.6.0-rc1
5) v0.5.0-rc2
Choose list option number above to select version of cheqd-node to install [default: 1]:
2
Set path for cheqd user's home directory [default: /home/cheqd]:

Recover node using interactive installer

If recovering or instantiating on another machine is required this installer also can be used. The main aasuption here that and operator already has private keys saved somewhere in safe place.

The steps are:

Make sure that there is a copy of your private keys and data/priv_validator_state.json file somewhere in safe place and on another machine

It's extreamely important cause during the installation process your CHEQD_HOME/.cheqdnode directory will be removed and all the configs and data will be lost.

Run installer in installation from scratch mode

For running installation from scratch mode an operator should answer with current home directory for cheqd user (by default it /home/cheqd) and No on the question about Existing cheqd-node configuration folder detected. Do you want to upgrade an existing cheqd-node installation? (yes/no) [default: no]. After that the question about installation from scratch will be and answer Yes is needed here.

Installation from scratch

After approving installation from scratch the list of questions will be the same as for clean installation.

If there is backup of whole config directory If you backed up the whole config directory, it would be better to skip setting up the node after installation, answer on question Do you want to setup a new cheqd-node? (yes/no) [default: yes]: no. Cause after installation you can just replace CHEQD_HOME/.cheqdnode/config with your own and start the service.

If there are only private keys In this case we would recommend to setting up the node after installation cause it does not require to change configs and genesis after.

Restore validator's keys

Before starting the service only one action is needed - copy your private keys and data/priv_validator_state.json back. Steps:

  • copy the whole config or only your priv_validator_key.json to CHEQD_HOME/.cheqdnode/config
  • copy your priv_validator_key.json to CHEQD_HOME/.cheqdnode/data

Start the service

Here an operator only need to run the service. For this you can follow postinstall steps

The example of questions/answers

Here home directory is supposed to be /home/cheqd and for this example the whole config was backed up
