Is an MQTT Client Connection per device required?

Thanks for publishing your work. I was looking at it and wanted to model an EON connected with 10-20 Devices connected to it. I had assumed that I could perhaps use the node._mqtt and assign it to the device._mqtt, but that breaks the Death messages.

Am I missing something obvious that allows a setup like this to share a connection to the MQTT broker?
