Replace all asserts with emitErrorFromNode for better user-error reporting

I think we're actually already close with this one. But essentially, what we want to do is make sure all compile time errors are properly reported to the user without breaking the entire toolchain. We already have a function for this emitErrorFromNode, but we're not using it everywhere yet.
