Alternatives to generic compute:

elastic compute - ...
shell environment - shell environment with one or more executables installed
desktop environment - a virtual desktop with one or more executables installed
CANFAR platform - a platform on demand ?
kubernetes cluster - a cluster on demand with one or more executables installed

Based on the use cases from talking with astronomers. They want to have a long running environment that they can come back to multiple times ..
