Democratic Education

One of the most unique educational opportunities offered by the
University
of California, Berkeley, the Democratic Education at Cal
program—colloquially referred to as DeCal—allows students to create and
teach classes for fellows students. The Issues, Berkeley Medical
Journal
course, often termed the “model DeCal” course, is designed for
individuals
interested in learning about journalism and science, medicine or public
health; Issues provides a rare opportunity for undergraduates to craft
and
publish an article each semester.

ISSUES students work closely with the editorial board, which is
itself
composed of former students, to draft two major articles throughout the
course of the semester: One focusing on a broad issue, and the other
representing a more focused examination of a given topic. The editorial
board then determines those articles that are best suited for
publication.
