The ABI is using "friend" with the meaning "peer/contact".
This does not mean anything for the programs themselves but can be (and very probably is) misleading the developers.
A "friend" is someone who is cooperative and usually trustable.
The other party in the remote communication can always be malicious. Technically, no data from the contact can ever be trusted (this has nothing to do with whether the contact is authenticated or not).
Of course Tox grew from efforts of different individuals with varying backgrounds and depths of understanding, via informal discussions. Nevertheless It is important to move from the "everyday's" terms to technical ones, to make understanding easier for new contributors and client developers.
This would among others make future discussions more productive!
