Fixes to make compatible with Python 3.12

This PR:

• Changes the code base to work with python 3.12
• Adds a matrix to the coverage tests to make sure upper and lower bounds are covered

@matmair definitely, I'll test it out tomorrow. Do I need to run it explicitly with python 3.12 or can I also do the tests with 3.11?

the tests would need to be done on 3.12 to ensure nothing breaks

The plugins seem to be working locally with a new 3.12 venv and also with my integration tests running in gh actions (I temporally modified the docker workflow on my fork to build with the 3.12 image and push to my ghcr repository).

Great, so from my POV we could merge this than and consider moving the image to Python 3.12 for the 0.16.0 release. I would not change it for 0.15.0 as plugins might need changes.
