It seems that in certain scenarios at least the throttling behavior of the scrubber widget is not behaving very well at all causing large backlogs of events to accumulate and thereby clogging up the kernel execution queue. This was originally encountered in holoviz-topics/EarthSim#32.

I believe the scrubber widget also needs to be documented somewhere on the website, unless that was done recently.

I have the cell magic %output holomap='scrubber' fps=4 in my notebooks with animations. Do I need to keep that?

You still have to activate the scrubber widget with:  %output holomap='scrubber'. You won't need to reduce the fps setting anymore since it will just throttle updates to the plot.
