Nix environment setup failures on Ubuntu 19.04

I've had a couple of people having issues getting the Nix env set up. On Debian there appears to be problems but I can see that those are logged in #103 and other issues. On Ubuntu 19.04 people were getting their Nix profiles setup incorrectly (broken symlinks); not sure why. Recommend spinning up a VM and running through the setup to test it out; we have moved on. 18.04 LTS works as advertised, no issues.

Also had an offhand comment from @samrose that the way Holonix has been configured leads to nondeterminism in the installation; not sure how much weight to lend to that or whether it applies here, but does seem potentially relevant. Could be logged in #52? shrug

Hi @pospi this issue has been noted and discussed with HC Core today 12/4. At this time, it would be really helpful if you can provide screenshots and examples of when the setup failures occur. The more info/details you can provide the better. This will be helpful when the core devs can prioritize the item and address.
