No Test output

I am not able to see any test output from any tests run from the sidebar. I click Show output, and it opens a terminal with "Test output ... " label, but the only thing i after a test completes is:
The test run did not record any output.

I've also tried the test explorer output and nothing shows up there either. There is a "Mocha Tests" output, but that just seems to show me an environment variable from supertest.
Am I missing something? the screenshot from the extension page makes it seem like this should be possible, but i can't seem to find any way to make it work.
