When I wrote #846, I made one of the potential solutions sounds way too easy, and kind of nerd-sniped myself into working on it. Of course, it took way longer than expected, but it is a dramatic improvement and resulted in some cleanups along the way (#854, #855, #858). All is well that ends well, I suppose.
