As a result of the new partial object API being put in place, it should now be possible to simplify a lot of the object construction code (#1249). This pull request does just that, starting with the builder API.
The cleanups done here are not limited to the builder API. It also involves a lot of code that calls the builder API, and is blocking some cleanups there.
