It's in the way of my next commit, as it starts failing when I add more validation code under the new infrastructure. It covers validation code that is about to be made redundant anyway, so this is no loss.

This is a continuation of #1279, #1283, and #1284, finally moving some actual validation code to the new infrastructure! All validation for the various vertex objects is covered.
