Overview

We need to have a document with recommendations for Audio setup so that people at Hack for LA that will be recording tutorials or making other presentations on behalf of Hack for LA can be of professional quality.

Action Items

  • We are currently in the process of moving the old wiki to the new website-wiki repo, so we will not be making any changes or additions to the old wiki at this time. Thus, we will be adding wiki content through a different process now. Read How to Contribute to the Wiki
  • Decide between the Shure SM7B or Blue Yeti
  • If choosing Shure SM7B additional hardware is also required
    • USB Audio Interface to convert microphone signal into format your computer can recognize (linked model is for only one mic but other models allow for 2+ mics)
    • XLR Microphone Cable (not included with Shure SM7B)
    • Boom Arm to hold the mic (does not come with any stand)

Resources/Instructions

Shure SM7B

Pros
  • Studio quality sound recording
  • Ideal for picking up the sound of only the person speaking into it without picking up any additional background noise
  • Extremely popular among professional musicians, podcasters, and other content creators
Cons
  • More complexity requiring additional components to function
  • More expensive

Blue Yeti

Pros
  • Does not require any additional hardware, plugs directly into your PC via a USB port using included cable
  • Can be configured to allow for multiple people to share one mic
  • Less expensive

Cons

  • Will pickup background noise if room not quiet
  • If room has bad acoustics the sound recording may echo
