Hey! I'm Sean, one of the maintainers of webpack. I wanted to create this issue to have a stream of consiousness and tracking for grails' progress in working with webpack. We want you all know that we (as an organization) are here if you need additional help or PR reviews, etc.
It looks that the profile is extremely vanilla (intentionally), so maybe there isn't much maintenance.
Regardless if there are improvements, or questions, don't hesitate to reach out or hit me up on twitter. @TheLarkInn :-D

@TheLarkInn thanks Sean! I'm the primary maintainer on this profile, and you're correct, this is a pretty minimalistic profile (it's intended to be used as a base for other profiles, including the react profile).
I have plans to upgrade to webpack 2.x and providing support for hot-loading if that proves feasible. Your support is very much appreciated, as is your work on improving webpack. Thank you!
@TheLarkInn Hi Sean! It's really cool of you to reach out. We very much appreciate this kind of relationship between tool developers!
The Angular 2 profile uses the Angular CLI which uses webpack behind the scenes. Due to the CLI handling that portion of it, I don't see the need for any direct manipulation of the build. Either way, it is great to know the webpack team is accessible.
No problem!!! Since we are getting pretty close to releasing our first webpack RC, I maybe be limited to support and PR review, but overall don't let that stop you from reaching out! We have a new docs page if you haven't already visited: webpack.js.org
