What does active mean?

This extension looks ideal for my purposes which is to answer the questions - how many members did the organisation have at the start of the year, and how many at the end. Just a little curious about the term 'active', which isn't a word that CiviCRM uses. I'm assuming you mean current memberships as defined by start and end dates, but it might be helpful to clarify that.
