Not sure what's going on but it's been broke for a while.
We need to urgently unbreak it because it's very annoying and misses Windows regressions.

We tried many things in #2628, #2626, #2633.

In the end I'm going with a change in functionality via #2634 since it didn't work as intended anyway.
