Once r-lib/lintr#1100 has been released.

There will be a consultation with the team to verify this is not going to cause heavy disruption.

Technical benefits I see to explicit returns:

  • can be linted (e.g., unreachable_code_linter())
  • closer to other language, thus easier to read & understand for non-R users
