Copy on request from riot-android element-hq/riot-android#2346

Hi, as it seems like there is only support for one user picture (which can everybody see) - I thought to ask if that is gonna change at some point.

A user might want to use a personal picture that personal friends/family can only see, while public/all others see another - without face e.g..

Is there any support in Matrix for this or if not, is there any way this privacy option may get added? This is currently a public leaking bit of information.

Profile Pictures are actually per-room. There is just no UI for this.

Duplicate of #5488

This is actually a duplicate of https://github.com/vector-im/riot-web/issues/2458 which covers avatars. #5488 has nothing to do with this issue.

Although, re-reading the description I question whether this is actually a duplicate at all. It kinda sounds like the desirable is to have multiple avatars for yourself that are shown to specific users, not just rooms. As in if I wanted to show you my blue avatar wherever I am, but show everyone else my green avatar.

@turt2live thats basically my point, yes. Especially for introducing Riot/Matrix to family is this the thing that is preventing use. Many people don't want to provide image or full name public, which can be found by username, in search or public channels too. And thats one such case and one big reason why I can't give Riot/Matrix to about 15 other people/devices I manage.

Other messengers e.g. have "nobody/my contacts/everybody" option. Which means messengers default image or the user image. This is okay too, but not ideal.
