It just doesn't send it (the same as an old riot-android)

For debugging this it may be interesting whether the room is encrypted or unencrypted.
(Maybe also check that your homeserver accepts files of this size.)

room is encrypted, hs limit is 512M

Trying to upload 500M files gives:
Failed to allocate a P byte allocation with Q free bytes and 115MB until OOM, max allowed
