It has long been possible to create visualizations based on saved searches instead of simple index patterns. However, saved searches have always been a bit ill suited for this task. They contain information like the columns selected in Discover which is unnecessary in visualize. They're really a representation of a particular Discover configuration and not just a data source. Saved queries are better suited to the task because they only contain a query, which is all visualize needs.
