Describe the feature:
When I click share in Kibana 8.16 this full screen modal window pops up:
Image

It used to be this little button in context:

What's bad about this new pop up:

  • Full screen pop ups disrupts flow.
  • Can't interact with the UI while this pop up is there, but we could with the old one.
  • I now have to move my mouse 5x further to copy the link, more likely to contribute to RSI. This distance depends on your resolution.
  • It only allows copying the short link. In some cases we need the full link.
  • I now have to manually click X to close the pop up. Previously I could click anywhere.

What's good:

  • 3 clicks instead of 4 to get the short link.

Describe a specific use case for the feature:
I think our feedback about it taking 4 clicks to share a short link each time is one if the reasons this was changed in the first place, but it seems to have resulted in not an improvement in many ways.
It could have been achieved by making Copy short url the default.

Just for context, this is typically used when sharing "what you see" to some where else, for instance slack. E.g. take an image of what you're seeing, and then add a URL so other people can check things out. The image is important for two reasons, 1. history, I often can't go back to a Kibana URL 6 months ago, the data might not be there, but the image "always" is. 2. convenience when working in e.g. Slack.
I'm mentioning this because the proper solution might be better integrations either with Slack #61464 or Cases (which could e.g. sync to slack) #183831

Asks:

  • Move the Copy link closer to Share button
  • Restore the ability to copy full URL
  • Allow dismissing without clicking the little x button

Tagging @elastic/appex-sharedux since they're the maintainers of the share modal.

The goal of Sharing Modal was to simplify the experience and remove controls/options that were not necessary. Per Triage on Dec 16 - I'm going to pull in design and PM. There is already consideration for changes to this modal. Is there REALLY a use case for "long urls?" what is it? This can be added as a tweak/fix to the overall Sharing Modal Architecture epic.
