Feedback from users is that they would like to know if they are being presented with a filtered view of the world. This is typically achieved with a marker icon on a node to show how many connections they are not currently seeing in the workspace.

There are some tough questions other than the performance concerns e.g. "should missing counts exclude blacklisted items?" and "what is the logic when accounting for grouped selections?"

This is definitely a feature that applies more in the "forensics" mode of use rather than the "wisdom of crowds" mode which relies on heavy filtering of useless connections.
