Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open discover in a new tab
  2. Add a few columns
  3. Click on "New"

Notice that the columns that you've added are still there. I would personally expect the columns to reset at this point.

  1. Save the search
  2. Add a few more columns
  3. Click on "New"

Now the columns reset to what they were right after you saved the search.

In my opinion, whenever you click "New", the columns should reset.
