I think scikit-build-core is ready to try if you'd like me to take a stab at it. I've got a ~~few~~ questions:

BEZIER_NO_EXTENSION is only an opt-in way to skip the extension build, correct? We can do that pretty easily now, I don't have a way to fallback if the build fails, but that's planned for the next release or two.

Actually, I think that's the only question.
