Image and asset storage approach (large amounts)

Want a way to do image storage for digital gardens with syncing to git. Currently usually use git-lfs

Use case: wanted to edit https://lifeitself.org/notes/books/dawson-tunik-stein-2004-national-leadership-study and paste lots of images into it (screenshots from the doc) and held off because would "clog up the repo" and takes lots of disk space. (even though we use git lfs we still a) use git lfs space b) that increase size of clone for build c) increases space used up locally)

What are desiderata:

• Simple, fast user experience
  • Still have the frictionless experience locally of "just pasting an image"
  • Bonus: still have backlinks and forward links style behaviour for the image
  • Bonus: works offline (at least for select images)
• Don't store in git

Can imagine a few options:

• "imgur" or similar: when you paste you direct upload to cloud provider and insert the link
  • 👎 no local file (or pointer) so no back links type stuff
  • 👎👎 won't work offline ...
• git-lfs
  • 👎 if you move your git provider all the links stop working (you have to pull and repush)
  • 👎 cost can become significant at least on github
