I'm trying to import one of schulferien.org's .ics file:
http://www.schulferien.org/media/ical/deutschland/ferien_nordrhein-westfalen_2017.ics
into cyanogenmod13.0's calendar app.

I expect the whole .ics file to be adopted either as a local calendar or as a subscription.
Opening the downloaded file results in a new event dialog for the christmas holidays only, starting today (Jan 3rd), to be added to an existing calendar...
The whole concept is wrong here, so please tell me how to help.

If you want to import whole calendars then probably this app is better.

Ah ok, i know both and employed them.
Still, i'm not sure if a convenient operating system should have desirable functions splitted into "one function per software", as in linux. IMHO both scenarios should be solved within the core calendar app.
Could users replace the core calendar easily with git-forks that have been pimped with better standard functionalities like those two?

@blausand, @danielegobbetti:
Sadly your mentioned application has an annoying bug with prevents multi-all-day events to be imported correctly: SufficientlySecure/calendar-import-export#50

My current workaround is to use Thunderbird to open an ICS file and copy'n'paste the events in a calendar which is synced to the Android device.
