Thanks! As a quick workaround, you can just create a sketch with a grid, and then toggle the grid off by pressing g (the image is saved as it is shown, so without the grid).
I missed this error, because while developing, I always use C-u sketch to quickly get a standard canvas (you can crop later using C-S-<drag-mouse-1>).
B.t.w there could be some issue with the coordinates printing in the echo-area so that it prints many times and the echo area will take too much space. You can fix it by evaluating (setq max-mini-window-height 2) before invoking sketch, but it is hard to find out how to set that 'automatically`.
You might be interested to know about canvas-mode also. I think sketch-mode can also get enhanced with (taking) functionality of that package.
