Some content can get in the way of a pleasant read aloud experience, such as the numbers used as references (linking to footnotes/endnotes).

There could be a test in an advanced book to check whether it is possible to listen to the publication without the reference numbers being announced (in the same way that a human reading aloud would typically omit this material). There may be other content that should also be left out by read aloud.

The read aloud feature in VitalSource Bookshelf offers the choice of Simplified and Detailed Reading Modes. At the time of writing this is the only reading app the provides this functionality.

The Skippability feature exist in Thorium.

One difficulty Is the lack of agreed list of what Is skippable or not and a smart way to inform the reader what content Is skipped.

Publishers also need a known list so they can author contents acordingly.
