I have <unclear extent="5" unit="syllables" reason="faded"/> in a MS transcription, with <unclear> set to "include" in /XML tags/. But nothing shows up in the apparatus. This is probably because the element has no content. But I'd like this markup to get noticed in the apparatus, perhaps in the same way as <gap>. Is there a way to make this happen, either by a different markup or by tweaking the saktumiva code?

I think that's probably the best way to get the effect I'm after in the output. But it's not really a gap in the normal sense, which is why I didn't want to use that idea. Wait, I didn't read the guidelines carefully enough. They say, for <gap>:
a point where material has been omitted in a transcription, whether for editorial reasons described in the TEI header, as part of sampling practice, or because the material is illegible, invisible, or inaudible.
(bold mine).
