Title:
Try Data Carpentry Neuroimaging

Michael Joseph @josephmje
Jerrold Jeyachandra @jerdra

Registered Brainhack Global 2020 Event:
BrainHack Ontario

Project Description:
A group of us have been building a set of BIDS/neuroimaging curriculum for the carpentries. The lessons cover intro to neuroimaging (using BIDS), pybids, downloading public data, working with fMRI data in python (nibabel and nilearn) as well as diffusion MRI analysis. We have previously taught these lesson's as part of BrainHack Toronto and BrainHack Western and the lesson's have now been moved into the "carpentries incubator". Meaning that we are hoping that others might be interested in teaching or learning from this material soon! We are inviting others to check out the material during BrainHack global and give us some feedback!

Data to use:
Dataset are described in individual lesson repo's. All lesson's can be run on binder so no local download required.

Link to project repository/sources:
https://conp-pcno-training.github.io/neuroimaging-carpentry/

Goals for Brainhack Global 2020:

  • try learning BIDS, pybids, fMRI analysis with python, or dmri analysis by following our tutorials (either the data carpentry format or the binder links to jupyter notebooks)
  • join us at our zoom meeting Dec 3, at 2pm EST to tell us how it went
  • you can also submit feedback by submitting issues to the lesson repo's or contacting us on mattermost or (discourse - for BrainHack Ontario) or carpentries slack

Good first issues:

  1. Tell us what you think? Taught this lesson? Let us know! carpentries-incubator/SDC-BIDS-IntroMRI#3
  2. Join our zoom meeting! Next zoom meeting - Thursday Dec 3, 2pm EST carpentries-incubator/SDC-BIDS-IntroMRI#11

Skills:
No skills needed - just try to learn from our content and tell us what you think!

Tools/Software/Methods to Use:

Your web browser - all lessons can be followed as jupyter notebooks on binder. Or set up a local python environment using the instructions given in the repos. (for example https://carpentries-incubator.github.io/SDC-BIDS-IntroMRI/setup.html)

Project Submission

Submission checklist

Once the issue is submitted, please check items in this list as you add under ‘Additional project info’

  • Link to your project: could be a code repository, a shared document, etc.
  • Goals for Brainhack Global 2020: describe what you want to achieve during this brainhack.
  • [ X] Flesh out at least 2 “good first issues”: those are tasks that do not require any prior knowledge about your project, could be defined as issues in a GitHub repository, or in a shared document.
  • Skills: list skills that would be particularly suitable for your project. We ask you to include at least one non-coding skill. Use the issue labels for this purpose.

Optionally, you can also include information about:

  • Number of participants required.
  • Twitter-sized summary of your project pitch.
  • Provide an image of your project for the Brainhack Global 2020 website.

We would like to think about how you will credit and onboard new members to your project. If you’d like to share your thoughts with future project participants, you can include information about:

  • Specify how you will acknowledge contributions (e.g. listing members on a contributing page).
  • Provide links to onboarding documents if you have some:

Hi @edickie Thank you very much for submitting such an amazing project! 🎉

It seems like we are missing a couple of details for regarding

a couple of issues that you might list as the starting point to be addressed through the event
and any prerequisite from your project attendees you would like them to come ready with (eg. tools to install etc.)

If you could fill those details before the event please, that would be really helpful to have for attendees to get prepared for the tasks at hand. Once you complete those listed details, we will approve the issue and it will be showcased at the Brainhack Global 2020 website.

Please do let us know if you would need any help from us in the meantime.

Hope you enjoy the Brainhack Global 2020! 🤗
